Once wood is restored or rid of its original surface barriers, it should be immediately coated with a protective finish. The first level of coating protection that you can apply to outdoor wood is a water repellent finish, also known as a water sealer. Wolman water repellents prohibit liquid precipitation (rain, sleet, snow and ice) from penetrating beyond the wood surface, which, if occurs frequently, can cause swelling, shrinking, warping and cracking.
